Magnetism is essential for making a good plasma trap. Charged particles are affected by magnetic fields, so if we get the magnetic field pattern right we can hold a plasma steady and keep it away from surfaces that would cool it down.

Some materials can be permanently magnetic, like the magnets you have been experimenting with. But, also, currents make magnetic fields. This is very important for fusion because we run currents through big coils to make the magnetic trap.
In Activity 5 you will investigate electromagnets, which are vital for making the strong magnets for tokamaks. You will explore how varying the electric current to the electromagnet affects the magnetic field created.
